Tip No 1: . How to create a restore point

A restore point is the point of time which you can create when your computer is working fine. If there is any problem later on then you can always return back to the restore point when your computer was working fine.

  • Right click on “My computer” icon the desktop and then click on “Properties”.
  •  Click on “System protection”.

  • Select the drive where your operating system is installed and click on “Create” button.

  • Give a name to the restore point and click on “Create” button.

  • You will get a message that the restore point is successfully created.
  • Click on “OK”.

Now if you want to use the restore point, click on “Start”-“All progrms”-“Accessories”-“System Tools” and then on “system restore”.

  • Click on “Next” button.

  • You can see your restore point. If not then select “Show more restore points”.

  • Click on “Finish“.

Your system will restore that particular point of time.

Tip No 2: How to download a Free antivirus program

Antivirus protects your computer from getting affected by viruses and hackers and is necessary for online transactions. For fully protecting the computer you should always buy a full version of antirust program. If you just want to surf the internet only then you can use free antivirus program. You can download AVG, MCAFee or any other antivirus program. In this tutorial I will show you how to download free AVG antivirus.

  • Open any web browser. In my case I am opening Google Chrome.
  • Now search for this phrase “Download free AVG antivirus”.

  • Click on Free download button.

  • Again click on “Download Now” button.

  • Open the file by clicking to start the installion.

Tip No 3: Remove the programs that start up with windows and boot the computer faster.

As you go on installing different programs then some of the programs startup along with the windows. This may make the computer take long time to boot and be ready to start. You can remove those program and make your computer load faster.

  • Click on “Start” and search for “msconfig”.

  • Click on it to run.
  • Click on “startup” tab.

  • Remove the tick mark from the check box of the program which you think is not needed to start along with windows.
  • Then click on “Apply” and then on “OK”.

You need to restart the computer to take the effect.

Tip No 4: Stop User account control from notifying you when you install any program

User Account control is a security feature in windows that informs you when a program makes change that requires administrative permission. Even if you are an administrator you need to give permission to make changes to the computer. If you think that the program you are going to install is safe then you can stop User Account control from notifying you.

  • Click on “Start” and then type “UAC” in the search box.
  • Click on “Change user account control settings”.

  • Now move the slider to the bottom “Never notify”.

  • Click on “OK” and then on “Yes”.

You also need to restart the computer to make the change.

Tip No 5: Switch off automatic windows update

By default your windows will download and update your Operating system automatically when you shut down your computer or start it. It takes time for your computer to download and update your system. If you don’t want widows to update the system automatically then you can change the settings.

  • Click on “Start” and then type “windows update” in the search box.

  • Click on “change settings”.

  • From the drop down menu, select “Never check for update”.

It is not recommend to switch off windows update as it provides update for many vulnerabilities and updates for your system security.

Tip No 6: Log into your user account automatically without putting the password

If you have entered a password for your user account then you need to enter it to log into your system. But if you are the only one user then you can bypass the password.

  • Click on “Start” button and then search for “netpliwz”.

  • Select the user and then remove the tick mark from the checkbox infront of “User must enter a user name and password to enter into this computer”.

  • You need to enter the password for your user account and again enter to re-confirm it.

Tip No 7: Bring back the hidden my computer, control panel icon on the desktop.

Whenever you install a fresh copy of windows in your system then you will only see “Recycle” bin icon on the desktop. You need to bring “computer” as well as other icons on the desktop.

  • Right click on the desktop and then click on “Personalize”.

Tip No 8:  Bring back the hidden “recent items in windows”.

Before in Windows 97, xp there used to be “Recent document” where you could find the recently opened or created documents. But in windows 7 this feature is hidden.

  • Right click on “Start button” and click on “Properties”.
  • Click on “Start menu” tab.
  • Click on “customize” button.

Tip No 9: Increase virtual memory

If you have less memory in your system and your computer is running slow then you can increase the virtual memory. You can use hard disk space as a RAM where the programs will run temporarily until you save the program.

  • Right click on “Computer” icon on the desktop.
  • Click on “Properties”.
  • Click on “Advanced system settings”.

  • Again click on “Advanced” tab.

  • Remove the tick mark from “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives”.
  • Select custom size radio button.

  • Check the recommend paging file size for all drives.
  • Enter the same amount in the initial size and you can enter any higher number around the twice in the maximum size.
  • Click on “OK” and then on “Apply” and then on “OK”.

Tip No 10: Bypass password required for waking up from sleep mode

If you don’t use your computer for a certain period of time then your computer goes to sleep mode and then you need to enter the password to wake it up. But if you are the only user for the computer then you can remove the password.

  • Click on “Start” and then search for “power options” and click on it.

  • Click on “Change settings that are currently unavailable” under “Password protection on wakeup”.
  • Select “Don’t require a password”.

Tip No 11: Show hidden files and folders

  • By default some files are hidden in your system. If you want to see all the hidden files then right click on “Start” and then click on “Windows explorer”.

  • Click on “apply” and then on “OK”.

Tip No 12: Starting computer in safe mode from windows

  • Click on “Start” and search for “msconfig”.

  • Click on “Boot” tab .
  • Under “Boot options”, select “safe boot”.

You need to restart the computer to start the computer in safe mode.

Tip No 13: Update drivers automatically

Drivers are small piece of software which communicates with your hardware. Without drivers your hardware can’t perform. You need to make sure that your drivers are always up-to-date so that it functions smoothly.

  • Right click on “computer” icon on the desktop and then click on “Properties”.
  • Click on “device manager”.

  • Now click on any hardware for which you want to update the driver.
  • In my case I want to update the graphics card so I will click on “Display adapter”.

  • Select “Search automatically for updated driver software”.

If the updated version of the driver is available then it will be downloaded and installed, if the latest version is already installed then you will get a message that the updated version is already installed.

Tip No 14: How to change the Login Picture

If you want to have your own picture as log in picture then go to control panel.

  • Click on “User accounts” from “Control Panel“.
  • Click on “Change your picture”.

  • Select the picture from the computer, if you want to have your picture then click for “Browse for more pictures”.

  • Select the picture and then click on “Open”.
  • The login picture will be changed.

Tip No 15: Arrange your icons automatically on the desktop

If you have icons scattered all over the desktop then you can automatically arrange it.

  • Right click on the desktop and select “sort by”.

  • You can sort the icons according to the size, type etc and the icons will be arranged according to that order.

Tip No 16: Run a program from search box or open any document.

  • Click on “start” and type the name of the program in the search box eg. Word and then click on it to open.
  • If you want to open any document then type the name of the document.
  • Click on it to open the document.

Tip No 17: Customize power option according to your need.

  • Click on “Start’ and then search for “power options”.

  • You can select “Balanced” which is recommended or else “Power saver”.

  • You can also make changes to the “Balanced” power plan.
  • Click on change plan settings.
  • You can set Turn off display to never or put your computer to sleep to never and then click on “save changes”.

But you should allow the computer and your display to sleep after a certain period of time so that the electrical energy is saved.

Tip No 18: Add any folder or drive to the favorite folder

Favorite has the list of most used folders.

  • Right click on “start” button and click on “Open windows explorer”.
  • Now go to any drive or open any folder which you want to include in Favorite folder.
  • Right click on “Favorites” and then click on “Current location to favorite”.

Now the drive or the folder will be included in Favorite list.

Tip No 19: Pin any appication to the tasbar

  • Right click on any application and then select “Pin to taskbar”.

Tip No 20: Use jumplist to open recently created or saved document or files from the programs pinned to the taskbar

  • For example right click on any application such as Google chrome.
  • You will see the jumplist which has list of webpages recently opened.

Tip No 21: Use the hidden theme in Windows

  • Press “windows button + R” to open the run dialog box.
  • Then look for the location “C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT

  • Run the application inside and the theme will be installed.

Tip No 22: Show or hidden the notification from the system tray

  • Right click on Taskbar and then click on “Properties”.
  • Click on “Customize” button next to the “notification”.

  • Now for any icon, click on the drop down menu and select either “Show or hide icons from the notification area”.

Tip No 23. Create a sticky note on the desktop

If you want to remember a note or a memo then you can create a sticky note on t he desktop so that you can remember what you have to do.

  • Click on “Start” and then type “Sticky notes” in the search box and click to open it.
  • Type in the message which you want to remember.

Tip No 24: Show additional clock

You have one cock which is displayed in the sytem tray icon. If you want to have another clock then click on the clock.

  • Click on the time on the system tray.
  • Click on “Change on date and  time settings”.

  • Select any time zone clock which you want to display.

Tip No 25: Create a desktop background from your picture

You can create an interchanging desktop background from your pictures.

  • Click on one picture, press ctrl button and go on clicking on the pictures which you want to make as a desktop background.
  • Right click on the picture and then select “Set as desktop background”.

Tip No 26: Run program pinned to the taskbar with shortcut key

The program which is at the first should be counted as 1 and others 2, 3 respectively. In my case the first program pinned to taskbar is internet explorer so it is 1. To run the program press Windows key and 1.

Tip No 27:  Open command prompt from desktop

If you want to open command prompt directly from desktop then hold shift key and then right click on any folder.

  • Click on “Open command prompt here” which opens the command window.

If you right click on any folder and then point to “Send to” then you will see certain menus. If you want to see all the hidden menus then hold the shift key and then right click on any file or folder.Then point to “Send to” and then you see all the hidden menus.

Tip No 29: Open any program or webpage from run

  • Press Windows + R to run the run command.
  • Then type the name of the program such as “winword.exe” to open the word program.

If you want to open any webpage then type in the address of the webpage. eg https://www.google.com. Then the webpage opens in your default web browser.

Tip No 30: Open another instance of program pinned to the taskbar

  • Press and hold shift key and then click on the program pinned to the taskbar to open another instance of the program.

Tip No 31: Make your own shortcut key for the program

  • Right click on the program icon on the desktop or from the start menu and then click on “Properties”.
  • Click on the shortcut text box. Press either Ctrl or Alt and press any number. You may have noticed that either you press Alt or Ctrl the other appears automatically. It is better to use number for the shortcut key as the alphabet may have been already used for word default shortcutkey.
  • I will press Ctr+Alt+1 for Word 2016.

Tip No 32: Copy the path of the file

In case if you have opened any file or folder in the windows explorer view and you want to copy the path of the file then Press and hold “Shift key” and then right click on the file or the folder.

  • Click on “Copy as path” to copy the path.

Tip No 33: Finding about the system information

  • Click on “start” and then search for system information in the search box.
  • Click to open it.

Tip No 34. Sort installed programs according to the size or the installed date

  • Open control panel.
  • Click on “Programs and features”.
  • Click on “Installed on” or “size” to sort the installed program according to the installed date or size. You can also sort the programs according to version or publisher.

Tip No 35: Create a shortcut icon of the program on the desktop

  • Click on “Start” button.
  • Click on any program and hold the mouse button and drag the program to the taskbar.
  • This creates a shortcut icon of the program on the desktop.

  • Right click on taskbar, select toolbar and then click on “new Toolbar”.

Tip No 37: Lock the taskbar

  • Right click on the taskbar and then click on “Lock the taskbar”.
  • Now you can’t drag and move the taskbar from the bottom.

  • Right click on the desktop and select “View”.
  • Remove the tick mark from “show desktop icons”.

  • Right click on “Computer icon” on the desktop and then click on “Properties”.
  • Click on “change settings”.

Tip No 40: Disable a hardware

  • Right click on “computer icon” on the desktop and click on “Properties”.
  • Click on “Device manager”.
  • Expand any hardware which you want to disable. In my case I will disable the network adapter.
  • Right click on the installed hardware and then click on “Disable”.

  • If you want to re-enable again, Right click and click on “Enable”.

Tip No 41: Uninstall a driver

In any case if your installed driver is giving you a problem. Then you can uninstall it.

  • Right click on “computer” icon on the desktop and then click on “Properties”.
  • Click on “Device manager”.
  • Expand the hardware for which you want to uninstall the driver.
  • Right click on the installed hardware and then click on Properties.

  • Select “Delete the driver software for this device.”

Tip number 42 : How to hide a drive in windows

  • Right click on “Computer” icon on the desktop.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Select “Disk management”.
  • Right click on the drive which you want to hide. It shouldn’t be the drive where your OS is installed.
  • Click on “Change drive letter and paths”.

  • If you have installed any program on that drive then it won’t function.
  • Click on “yes”.

If you want to bring back the drive again, then right click on the drive whose letter is missing and hidden.

  • Click on “change drive letter and paths”.

The drive appears again.

Tip no 43: Activate built in administrator account

By default windows has an administrator account which is hidden. If you want to activate it you should at first log in using another administrator account.

  • Right click on “Computer” icon and then click on “manage“.
  • Click on “Local users and groups”.

Tip no 44: Activate built in guest account

If you want other people to use your computer then you can enable guest mode so that they don’t have any permission to make changes to your computer.

  • Right click on “Computer icon” and then click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Local users and groups”.
  • Double click “Users” folder to open it.
  • Right click on “guest” account and click on “properties”.

Tip no 45: Backup installed driver from your system

It is always a good idea to have backup of the drivers of your system. In any cash you have to reinstall a fresh copy of windows then you can install driver for your hardware. For this you can use programs such as “Driver magician”. You can download trail version of the program.

  • Run the program.
  • It will detect the drivers which you have installed in your system. It will not display the drivers of the hardware which windows automatically detects and install such as mouse, keyboard.
  • Now select any driver which you want to backup.
  • Click on “Start backup”.

Tip no 46: Download and use portable application

If you want to a program without installing in your system then you can use the portable version of the program.

  • Go to portableapps.com
  • Download any apps and save it to the usb drive.
  • Install the program in the usb drive.
  • After installation run the program from the usb.

Tip no 47: Use the checkbox to select multiple files in windows explorer

Generally when we have to select more than one file in Windows explorer then we press Ctrl button and go on clicking to select the files but if you want to use the mouse to select the files then

  • Click on “Windows explorer” on the taskbar.

  • Click on “View” tab and then put a tick mark on the check box in front of “use check boxes to select items”.

Tip No 48: Go to the desktop directly without minimizing the programs manually

If you have lots of programs window opened and you want to go to the desktop then you need to minimize them one by one. Instead of doing that click on “show desktop” button on the right of the clock which will directly take you to the windows desktop.

If you want to view the submenus of the control panel items directly from the start menu then

  • Right click on “Taskbar” and then click on “Properties”.
  • Click on “Start menu” tab and then click on “Customize” button.

Tip No 50: Dock the taskbar to any position

If you want the taskbar to move it to other position like left, right or top then you can do it. Point the mouse pointer to the taskbar and the hold the mouse button and drag the taskbar to any where you like.
