WiFi internet is the most widely used form of internet at this time. If you are experiencing problems problems with your home WiFi internet signal then below are some points to solve this problem.
- How to solve the internet connection problem of proxy server is refusing connection
- How to correctly install software downloaded from the internet
- How to test your internet speed
Optimize your system:- Before talking about W-Fi routers, the first thing you need to do is to update your system and optimize it for better performance. Scan your Computer for antivirus. Delete any unnecessary files and folders to free up your hard disk. Defragment your hard disk. Update your wireless router driver to the latest one.
Upgrade your browser:- Upgrade your browser to the latest version. Use the best browser such as “Mozilla Firefox” or “Google Chrome”. Remove unnecessary Toolbar and extensions which makes your browser slow.
Switch off or reboot the router :- If you have been continuously using the Router for a long period of time then sometimes simply switching it for a short period of time can boost your home WiFi internet.
Upgrade the Firmware of your router:- Your WiFi also runs with firmware. So, you need to upgrade your router to the latest firmware. For example I have Linksys WRT 120N. So at first I have to check what is my Router’s firmware version.
I will log into Linksys router home page by entering the address http://192.168.1.1 in the browsers address bar. I need to enter the user name and password for the router. Let me remind you that router of different company have different address to log on.
On the right corner of the page you can see the firm ware version of my router is version 1.0.07. So, I will go to Linksys home page. I will search my Linksys model number in the Linksys website. Then I will go to the download page where I will check my latest version of firmware.
As per the Linksys page you can see that I have latest firmware installed. If not I will download the firmware. Then I will go to my router’s page as shown in Fig 1
Now I will click on “Administration” and then on “Firmware upgrade”.
Then click on “Choose File” and select the downloaded firmware. Then click on “Start upgrade”. Until the firmware upgrade process doesn’t complete you shouldn’t interrupt the process.
Location of Wi-Fi router:- You should have proper place to keep your Wi-Fi router. It should be at the center of your room, better at the top on the ceiling. There shouldn’t be any obstacle in between the router and your computer source. Keep the router near to the computer.
Using Different channel:- Channels can be assumed as the transmission frequency through which the Wi-Fi internet travels. You need to check your neighbour’s wireless connection to find out what channels their Wi-Fi is using. You can use a program called “inSSIDer” which you can download for free from “http://inssider.en.softonic.com”. Below is the screenshot for channels around my area.
Check the channels in use. Depending upon your router you may have up to 11 or 14 channels. Generally channel 1,6, 11 frequencies don’t overlap with each other, so you should choose among these channel through which the WiFi will broadcast. But if you find that you have so many WiFi around you using the same channel than you want to use the one which is not used by any one else.
Using a different unique broadcasting name:- If you are using a Linksys router then the WiFi name by default will be Linksys. Now if you have neighbors around you using the same name then there may be interference in the signal. So, you need to change the name for your Wi-Fi and keep something unique.
No. of sources using WiFi:- Don’t use too many sources which uses the Wi-Fi bandwidth at the same time. You don’t want to connect 10-15 computers at the same time especially you don’t have subscribe to a higher WiFi speed. Stop downloading huge programs when you are using your computer to browse the internet. You can leave the downloading process at night when no one uses the WiFi.
Wireless Equipment:- Don’t keep other wireless equipment near to the router such as cordless phone, TV remote etc. These devices can interfere with the Wi-Fi signal.
Change WiFi Password:- You should change your WiFi password after every few months. You can’t be sure whether your password is hacked by someone else. So, in order to prevent your WiFi from getting hacked, change the password. Create a strong password which should be the combination of symbols, numbers and characters in both upper case and lower case.
Upgrading to a better WiFi plan:- The last option for you to increase your WiFi signal is to upgrade to a higher WiFi plan. If you are still using Dial up connection, better go for ADSL or Optical fiber Wi-Fi. You can’t expect to get a high internet speed if you are still using Dial up with 512 kbps per second. So upgrade it to a better Wi-Fi plan.
Conclusion:- So, the first thing to increase the Wi-Fi signal is to optimize your computer for better receiving the WiFi signal by scanning it for viruses. Update the driver for your computer WiFi network adapter. Place the WiFi router in an open area, preferably in the middle at the top fixed to the ceiling. Remove any wireless devices which will distract the WiFi signal. Periodically change the password from time to time. Upgrade the firmware or the software for the router and don’t forget to turn off the Wi-Fi router when not in use.
