Windows logon screen is the welcome screen which Windows 7 displays when you start the computer. By default it will have a default image and then you can see a user name text and the password box. Unless you haven’t set up to logon automatically, you need to enter the password for the username then only you can logon to the computer. It is for security purpose so that other people can’t log into your computer.

If you feel that windows 7 screen is boring then you can set custom images as background for Windows 7 logon screen.


Method 1 of 2: Using Free software

Below are some of the software you can use to change the windows 7 logon background image

1. Logon Screen

Download this software from here.

  • Install and run the software.


  • On the right side you see the default images, click on it to select.
  • If you want to select your own image, click on “Browse” button.


  • Select the image and click on “Open” button.

How to Restore the default image

restoreIf you want to restore the default logon image changed by logon studio then click on the drop down menu as shown above.

  • Click on “Restore” button.
  • Now your computer logon background will be changed to default image.

2. Tweaks Logon

Download the software from here.

  • Install and run the software.
  • tweak


  • Click on “Change Logon Screen“.


  • You can select picture which you want as a background lock screen.
  • Click on “Open” button.
  • tweakIf your background is successfully changed then you get a message as shown above.
  • If you want to test the background image, then click on “Test” button.
  • Your computer will be locked.

Note: If the picture size is bigger than 245 KB, if not then the software will automatically adjust the picture and set as a background.

If you want to revert the background then click on “Revert to Default Logon Screen“.

3. Windows 7 logon background changer

  • Download the software from here.
  • Install and run the software.


  • You can select any default image and click on “Apply” button at the top to apply the background image.
  • If you want to select your own image then click on “Choose Folder” button.


  • Now you can browse through the computer to select the folder where you have stored your picture and then click on “OK” button


  • Now your images will appear where there were default images before.
  • Select any image and then click on “Apply” button.
  • If you want to test the background image then press “Alt+Del+Ctrl” to lock the computer and view the background lock screen.


Note:- If the program asks you to run as an administrator then click on “Yes” button.

How to restore the background image



  • Click on “Settings” button as shown above in the picture.


  • Click on “Reset Default Folder” button and then click on “OK” button.
  • Now all the default pictures will be loaded.
  • Select the default picture and then click on “Apply” button.

Method 2 of 2: Using Registry Editor


  • Click on “Start” button and type “regedit” in the search box.
  • Run the utility program.
  • Navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background] “OEMBackground


  • Double click on “OEMbackground” .


  • Change the value to “1“.


  • Again go to this location in registry editor “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System] “UseOEMBackground


  • Double click on “UseOEMBackground” and change the value to “1“.
  • Now you need your own picture to set it as the background image for windows logon screen. The image should have the same resolution as the desktop.


  • Right click on your desktop and select “Screen resolution“.


  • You will see the current screen resolution for your computer.
  • Now your custom picture should have the same resolution i.e “1280 x 1024” in case of my computer as shown above.

How to change the resolution for your picture

Using Photoshop

  • Open your picture in Photoshop program.


  • Click on “Image” and then on “Image size“.


  • At first remove tick mark from the check-box in front of “Constrain Proportions” so that you can set the desired pixel for the width and height of the image.
  • Now enter the desired pixel for height and width for your picture. In my case I have to enter “1280 x 1024“.
  • This is how you can change the resolution in Photoshop.

Using Paint brush

  • Open the picture in paint.


  • Click on Resize button.
  • Remove the tick mark from the check-box in front of “Maintain aspect ratio” so that you can set the image height and width as you like.


  • Now change the size of the image. In my case I will set to “1280 x 1024“.
  • Now copy the image and save the image to “C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds
  • You need to provide administrator right to save the image in that folder.
  • If there is any image saved before in that folder, copy and save the image in another location for sometime.

How to restore the default image

To restore the image you need to go to the location in registry editor as shown above:

  • “[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background] “OEMBackground
  • Set the value of “OEMBackground” to “0“.
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System] “UseOEMBackground”
  • Set the value of “UseOEMBackground” to “0“.
  • Restart the computer.
