What is Control Panel and Why should you disable Control Panel ?

Control panel is an inbuilt Windows application which allows a user to change settings in your computer like adding or removing program, changing the computer’s keyboard and language settings and many more features.

If you allow anyone who uses your system to have access to the control panel in your system then they can make changes to your system. So, disable the control panel and protect your system from getting messed up.

How to disable control panel ?

Click on “Start button” and type “gpedit.msc” in the search box.

You should see “gpedit.msc” at the top of the start menu.

Click on it and you will get the “Local Group Policy Editor” window as shown below.


Go to “User Configuration” – “Administrative Templates” – “Control Panel“.

On the right side you can see a an option “Prohibit access to the Control Panel“.


Click on “Edit“. You will see the following window.


Select “Enabled” radio button to disable others to access to the control panel.

Click on “Apply” and then on “OK“.

This is how you can disable control panel from being accessed by others.

IMPORTANT NOTE:- Always allow others to access your computer through Standard User so that you can limit them to access to your system settings
