SSID is the short form of “service set identifier“. It is what that differentiates a Wireless LAN from each other. Whenever you connect to a wireless network then you will have a SSID for your wireless network adapter. If you don’t set SSID for your wireless network adapter then the default SSID for the wireless network adapter will be set for example Linksys for Linksys routers. The problem is that if your neighbors have the same network adapter and don’t set the SSID then all will have the same default SSID eg. Linksys. This may cause network signal interference and your network signal will drop abruptly.

How do IĀ find my SSID

  • The easiest way to find your SSID is to click on the wireless icon on the system tray icon located on the lower right corner of the taskbar.

showssid

  • You will see a list of SSID and the one where you see connected is your SSID.

How to hide SSID

Now you may want to hide broadcasting your SSID. If you don’t want hackers to sniff your network name and trying to crack then you can hide it. It depends on which Wireless network adapter you are using. In this article I will take the example of Linksys wireless router.

  • Log into your wireless network adapter. For Linksys you need to enter http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

  • Enter the user name and password for your Linksys router.
