Imagine that you and your friends have copied files from another system and then you want to use in your own computer. If you are few then you people can copy the files from the USB storage device to your own systems. But if you are more in number than it takes time for each of you to copy files in your own systems. So, instead of copying the files in each of your system you can share the USB storage device over the same WI-Fi network and use it from your own system. You can limit the number of users who can share the USB storage device and you can allow only to read or to read and edit also.
How to share the USB storage device ?
You should know the name of the computer where you will plug-in the USB storage device.
You may also be asked the user name and the password for the user name where you will plug the USB device. This is for security reason.
Now you need to share the USB device.
Right click on the USB storage device.
Go to “Share with” and then click on “Advanced sharing” button.
In the “Share name” box you can see the drive letter for the USB drive. You can leave as it is or give a name to the drive.
“Limit the number of simultaneous user to“. Include the number of users to whom you want to allow to share the drive.
Click on the “Permission” button and you will get another window as seen below. Now you can either select “Read” only or “Read” and “Change” to allow to read only or allow modification also.
Click on “OK” after making the changes.
Click on “Apply” and “OK” until you close all the opening window.
How to access the Shared USB device with another computer in the same network ?
Go to “Run” command by pressing “Windows” and “R” button.
Now type two back slashes and the name of the computer to which the USB storage device is connected.
Tip:- How to know the computer name ?
Right click on the “My Computer’ icon on the desktop. You will get the properties box where you can see the computer name.
Then click on “OK” button.
Now you will be able to see the shared drive.
If you have allowed to read only then the other user can open and read the documents in the shared drive. If you have allowed to share and change then the other user can open as well as change the documents in the shared folder.
Sharing a usb storage device over the same Wi-Fi network is easy.
Just plug the usb device in the main computer and share it. You can only allow to read or allow to read and change both.
Use the other system to access the shared drive.
